大多數中國人會用以下7個單詞向外賓介紹白酒：
spirit、liquor、alcohol、ale、wine、fire-water和maotai。但這些詞都不適合指代白酒，這是為何？網路君來解釋一番。
（1）Spirit： 這是個多義詞帶肆，意指精神、靈魂和情緒。其復數形式spirits泛指各種烈酒，包括威士忌（Whisky）、白蘭地（Brandy）、金酒（Gin）、朗 姆酒（Rum）等。工業酒精或乙醇也可用這個單詞，外科醫生用的消毒酒精（surgical spirit）還是用這個詞。顯然，用spirit表示中國的白酒並不合適。
（2）Liquor：這個單詞源於法語，本義與借自法語的另 一單詞liquid（液體）有關。在美國，liquor指用蒸餾法釀制的各種烈性酒；泛指時與spirits同義。同時，含有酒精的任何烈性酒在美國都可 以用liquor或hard liquor表達。不過美國的liquor不包括葡萄酒和啤酒；但在英國伏慧，liquor可以指任何一種含有酒精成分的飲品，包括葡萄酒和啤酒。
